Listed Australian property and built-environment groups are betting hard on AI, from tenant experience to climate disclosure to asset operations. The governance has to keep up. This is the role that makes sure it does.

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

A listed Australian group operating across property and the built environment, with thousands of staff, tenants and customers, an established AI investment, and executive sponsorship behind doing it responsibly. The use cases, the appetite and the budget are in place. What they need now is the person who owns the framework, the risk register, and the call on what gets approved.

ABOUT THE ROLE

You will be the first dedicated AI Governance Manager in the business, reporting into senior technology and data leadership and partnering closely with legal, security, privacy, sustainability and the operating businesses.

Your mandate is end-to-end ownership of the responsible-AI function: the framework, the policy, the review gates, the model inventory, and the controls that the rest of the organisation builds against. You start as the function. As the work scales, you will build the team underneath you. This is a hands-on governance role, not a slide-deck role. You will write the policy, run the review forums, advise on regulation, and make the call on which AI use cases get the green light. You set the bar, and you defend it.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own the AI governance framework: policy, risk assessment, model inventory and controls, aligned to Australia's AI Ethics Principles and the Voluntary AI Safety Standard
  • Set the assurance pathway for tenant and customer data uses of AI, including personalisation, leasing analytics and customer-service automation, with privacy and bias at the centre
  • Build the assurance pathway for sustainability and climate AI, including emissions modelling, ESG reporting inputs and any AI-augmented sustainability claims that will be read by investors and regulators
  • Run the AI risk register and the review gates for new AI use cases across the operating businesses, including assessments for accuracy, bias, privacy and fitness for purpose
  • Partner with legal, security, privacy, sustainability and data teams on regulatory developments, including the Privacy Act reforms, ASX corporate governance expectations, and the AI rules emerging from Canberra
  • Maintain the enterprise inventory of approved AI tools and key data assets, leading periodic suitability and compliance reviews
  • Make governance an enabler. Build the controls engineers will actually follow, not the ones that get bypassed

ABOUT YOU

The AI governance pool in Australia is small, and we know it. We are looking for capability and judgement, not a perfect sector match.

  • Background in AI governance, data governance, risk, privacy, compliance, audit or AI assurance, with hands-on exposure to AI systems in production
  • Comfortable across the spectrum of AI risk: predictive models, generative AI, agentic systems and vendor-supplied AI. Deep experience in one and the appetite to get fluent in the others is fine.
  • Fluent in the Australian regulatory landscape and where AI rules are heading, including the Voluntary AI Safety Standard and the proposed mandatory guardrails, or fast enough to get there
  • Able to translate ethical principles into practical controls that engineers respect and actually implement
  • Comfortable chairing cross-functional forums and writing the recommendation that lands with a steering committee
  • Calm, credible, and willing to say no to the right things at the right time
  • Sector experience welcomed broadly. Financial services, regulator, Big 4, government, healthcare, energy, infrastructure, property, retail and other listed Australian corporates all give a strong foundation. Tell us where you have done the work and we will assess on capability, not sector tag.
  • ESG, sustainability or climate-disclosure assurance exposure is a real plus given where this work is landing, but not a deal-breaker if you bring strength elsewhere

WHAT'S ON OFFER Own the AI governance function from day one for a listed Australian property group with executive backing and real AI ambition. Define how a complex, customer-facing, ESG-committed business does responsible AI, with the mandate to make the call, not just the recommendation.

Build the team underneath you as the function matures.
