We are currently seeking a compassionate and motivated Cancer Support Officer to join our team and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and families across all stages of the cancer journey.
About the RoleThe Cancer Support Officer provides culturally appropriate support, advocacy, and practical assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and their families throughout the cancer journey.
Working closely with internal clinical teams, external health providers, and community supports, the role assists clients to navigate the healthcare system, access appointments and treatments, and remain engaged in ongoing care and follow-up services.
This position plays an important role in improving cancer outcomes by reducing barriers to care and supporting culturally safe, holistic wellbeing for clients and families.
Key ResponsibilitiesProvide culturally appropriate support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and families throughout the cancer journey
Support clients to access cancer screening, appointments, treatment, and follow-up care
Assist with appointment coordination, transport arrangements, and healthcare system navigation
Advocate for clients and assist in addressing barriers to care and support services
Work collaboratively with internal teams and external providers to support coordinated care
Provide practical support to clients including assistance with accommodation, financial supports, and referrals to relevant services
Deliver culturally appropriate health information and education to clients and families
Maintain accurate client records and documentation in line with organisational requirements
Participate in continuous quality improvement activities and relevant training opportunities
We are looking for someone who is passionate about supporting community members and improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The ideal candidate will have:
Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
Understanding of the barriers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people may face when accessing healthcare services
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build trusting relationships
Demonstrated empathy, compassion, and commitment to confidentiality
Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
Qualifications in community services, health, public health, health promotion, or a related field, or willingness to obtain
Current QLD Driver’s Licence
Blue Card (or ability to obtain)
National Police Check
Current First Aid Certificate (or ability to obtain)
Proof of immunisation or non-susceptibility to Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPDs) in line with organisational requirements
