We are looking for an experienced Casual Ferry Master who brings a strong focus on safety. This is a rewarding role, focused on connecting communities to where they live, work, and play.
As a Casual Ferry Master for Keolis Hunter, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient navigation and operation of vessels, and transportation of passengers and crew in accordance with the requirements of Vessel Operating Manuals, Government Legislation and AMSA.
NOTE: This role involves a variety of shifts as required across early mornings, days, nights, weekends, public holidays, and special events.
Key Responsibilities
Navigational safety — Ensuring the ferry follows safe routes, avoids hazards, and complies with maritime regulations.
Passenger and crew safety — Overseeing emergency procedures, safety drills and reporting.
Operational management — Coordinating departures, arrivals, loading and unloading of passengers while prioritising the safety of passengers and crew. Meeting timetabling requirements and completing vessel inspections.
Communication — Ensuring clear, concise communication to VTS, Operations Control Centre and the crew.
Weather and risk assessment — Monitoring sea and weather conditions and adjusting operation, approach and departure from wharves accordingly.
Regulatory compliance — Following policies and procedures, operating in accordance with the Safety Management System (SMS). Ensuring the ferry meets maritime laws, environmental standards, and inspection requirements. Maintaining vessel logbook and reporting as required to the Operations Control Centre and AMSA. Assisting with the review, updating and implementation of policies, procedures and training materials.
Physical requirements - The ability to perform moderate physical tasks including but not limited to bending, lifting, reaching, stepping up/down from the wharf or vessel and performing minor maintenance as required.
Qualifications and Requirements
Experience in operating equivalent vessels
Valid Certificate of Competency Master <24m Near Coastal
Valid Certificate of Competency Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal (MED3)
Valid Certificate of Local Knowledge issued for the Port of Newcastle or ability to obtain
Valid First Aid and CPR certificate
