About the Role

The primary focus of the School nurse is to support the School Community through the provision of medical support for our students including first aid treatment, first aid support at events and accurate and timely recording and documentation of first aid treatment. The School nurse supports the prevention of medical incidents at the School through supporting the development and implementation of medical plans for our students when needed.

Work Pattern: This is a casual position with no firm advanced commitment to continuing and indefinite work and is not a casual roster‑based role. Instead, it is a true casual arrangement where you may be called upon to work only when required, such as to cover the incumbent position or to support additional projects.

Key Duties

Medical Treatment

  • Provide effective initial treatment in the event of minor medical conditions to emergency medical situations. This includes but is not limited to; management of cuts, abrasions, contusions, soft tissue injury, fractures, basic wound care, minor bleeding to emergency situations including trauma, severe bleeding and asthma attacks.

  • Manage sports injuries and preventative taping for specified sports activities in consultation with other medical professionals and trainers.

  • Support the establishment and implementation of action plans for specific student medical conditions. This includes but is not limited to anaphylaxis, diabetes, epilepsy and severe allergies.

  • Effectively communicate and liaise with school staff, parents, students, doctors and specialists in regard to any medical conditions relating to the student.

  • Ensure that documentation related to injuries or medical treatment is recorded professionally and accurately.

  • Manage the dispensing of medication to students as required.

Medical Emergency Management

  • Provide medical emergency services, as the situation demands.

  • Provide medical guidance and support to the Executive Leadership team during an emergency

Student Health Information

  • Ensure that Heads of School are informed as necessary about incidents of concern.

  • Ensure that accurate records of treatments provided are kept for reporting and reference as necessary.

  • Ensure all student information is used and managed in accordance with the School’s Privacy Policy

Communication

  • Record all treatment provided to students who attend the School’s Sickbay using the School’s Student Management System, ensuring that this recording meets and maintains compliance and record keeping requirements.

  • Provide informed and accurate information to parents of students that attend sick bay for treatment.

  • Follow-up with parents on the recovery of students that have been treated in the sick bay for serious illness or injury. Keep key staff informed of the student’s ongoing recovery and treatment plan.

  • Support the Head of Student Services and the Student Services team with the ongoing treatment of students with personalised learning plans and medical action plans.

Other Duties

  • Assist in the management of the School’s first aid equipment, including stocktake and replenishment of first aid kits, epi-pens, medication and glucose supplements (poppers, jellybeans).

  • Support review and service of School first aid kits as required.

  • Check all student medical forms prior to school camps and excursion and ensuring appropriate medication and first aid supplies are available for the specific student needs. Ensure that all relevant medical information is communicated appropriately to staff attending school camps and excursions.

  • Attend excursions and/ or camps to assist students with specific medical treatment, as required.

  • Assist with other duties, including administration and academic services duties, as required.

About You

Essential:

  • Registration with AHPRA.

  • Relevant experience working as a Registered Nurse.

  • Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent

  • Ability to engage with staff, students and other stakeholders compassionately and empathetically while maintaining confidentiality and professional boundaries.

  • Proven ability to liaise professionally with stakeholders in a skillful manner, understanding the importance of protocol and quality customer service and customer experience.

  • A high level of integrity, diplomacy, discretion, and confidentiality.

  • Current Working with Children Check employment clearance.

  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Effective organisational and time management skills.

Ability to:

  • Work autonomously, using initiative and without direct supervision support.

  • Prioritise, work under pressure and to deadlines.

  • Build rapport quickly and maintain trust.

  • Contribute openly and with confidence with other team members in a respectful and sensitive manner.

  • Recognise internal and external feedback as an opportunity for growth.

  • Be flexible and adapt quickly in a dynamic environment.

Desirable:

  • Pediatric and/or emergency medical experience

  • Qualifications or willingness to gain qualifications to deliver First Aid or other related training.

  • Excellent computing skills or willingness to obtain such skills
