The role:

The role of the Experienced Structural Engineer is to provide structural engineering services to new and existing clients under the supervision and direction of the Engineering Manager.

Task & responsibilities

Structural Engineering

  • Undertake structural condition audits of mining, port, and infrastructure assets (e.g. ROMs, tunnels, workshops, berths, dolphins, footings).
  • Prepare and analyse detailed reports covering structural, mining, and marine investigations, as well as concrete and steel audits with recommended repair strategies.
  • Perform structural steel and concrete design, including F.E.A. modelling, hand calculations, 3D/2D modelling, detailed designs, drawing checks, and preparation of scopes of work and technical specifications.
  • Provide professional engineering input across analysis, inspections, investigations, calculations, and reporting.
  • Act as a project engineer on client projects, coordinating with support from RKF ES offices.
  • Liaise with internal teams across multiple offices and with external stakeholders to ensure smooth project delivery.

Project Management & Client Liaison

  • Manage client expectations regarding project delivery, ensuring outcomes are on time, within budget, and aligned with scope.
  • Prepare bids, tenders, and fee proposals for new and existing client opportunities.
  • Represent and promote RKF ES capabilities in all client and stakeholder interactions.
  • Ensure compliance with company procedures and industry standards in all project phases.

Work Health and Safety

  • Prepare and/or review safety documentation, including Job Hazard Analyses, Work Method Statements, and Field Safety Plans.
  • Ensure all work complies with company and client health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Follow all safety training, instructions, and requirements to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Take reasonable care for personal health and safety and that of others in the workplace.

Business Development

  • Contribute to business growth by assisting in the preparation of bids and tenders.
  • Actively promote company services and technical expertise to prospective and existing clients.
  • Finance and Compliance
  • Ensure all project work is delivered within approved timeframes and budgets.
  • Accurately complete and submit timesheets in a timely manner.
  • Comply with all reasonable instructions and requirements set by supervisors and management.

Travel and Site Work

  • Be available for interstate or intrastate travel to client sites, including remote locations, sometimes at short notice.
  • Undertake site inspections and testing work in line with project requirements and safety protocols.

Other Responsibilities

  • Support colleagues across offices to achieve project and organisational goals.
  • Carry out additional duties as directed by supervisors or management.

Qualification & experience

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil/Structural) – essential.
  • Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status – essential.
  • Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) – essential.
  • Postgraduate qualification (e.g., Master’s degree in a relevant field) – desirable.

Experience

  • Minimum 5+ years post-graduation experience in a structural or project engineering role (mandatory).
  • 8+ years post-graduation experience in a structural or project engineering role (desirable).
  • Proven proficiency with engineering design software and analysis tools, including Strand7 and SPACE GASS (essential).
  • Advanced computer literacy, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects through all stages, from design to delivery.
