Wren Fishing Pty Ltd is an established commercial fishing company operating throughout the Northern Australian fishing grounds. We are seeking experienced full-time Ship's Masters and Ship's Engineers to join our commercial fishing operations based in Karumba, Queensland and operating along the north and east coast of Australia.

Positions Available:

Ship's Master (ANZSCO 231213)

Alternative Title: Ship's Captain

Salary: AUD $80,000 to $110,000 per year plus superannuation and applicable bonuses

Ship's Engineer (ANZSCO 231212)

Alternative Title: Marine Engineer

Salary: AUD $80,000 to $105,000 per year plus superannuation and applicable bonuses

SHIP'S MASTER DUTIES:

  • Controlling and managing the operations of commercial fishing vessels in accordance with maritime legislation and company procedures
  • Navigating and operating vessels using navigational equipment, charts and marine systems
  • Planning and directing vessel movements, routes and operational activities
  • Monitoring weather conditions, tides, sea conditions and navigational hazards
  • Supervising, directing and coordinating crew members and vessel activities
  • Ensuring safe vessel operation and compliance with workplace health and safety requirements
  • Maintaining vessel logs, navigation records and regulatory documentation
  • Monitoring vessel performance and coordinating maintenance and repair activities
  • Ensuring compliance with maritime regulations, vessel operational standards and company procedures

SHIP'S ENGINEER DUTIES:

  • Controlling and managing the operation and maintenance of vessel plant, machinery and equipment
  • Operating, monitoring and maintaining vessel engines, propulsion systems and auxiliary equipment
  • Inspecting machinery and engineering systems to ensure safe and efficient vessel operations
  • Diagnosing mechanical faults and arranging maintenance and repair activities
  • Managing preventative maintenance schedules for vessel machinery and equipment
  • Monitoring fuel, lubrication, cooling and mechanical systems
  • Maintaining engineering records, maintenance logs and compliance documentation
  • Ensuring vessel machinery and equipment comply with maritime regulations and safety requirements
  • Coordinating repairs and ensuring operational readiness of vessel engineering systems
  • Demonstrate experience maintaining marine engines, vessel machinery and engineering systems

Successful applicants must:

  • Have a minimum of 2 years relevant experience as a Ship's Master, Ship's Engineer, Marine Engineer or in a closely related maritime role
  • Hold relevant marine licences, registrations and certifications required for the position, including applicable AMSA qualifications or equivalent
  • Demonstrate experience managing vessel operations, machinery, equipment or crew responsibilities relevant to the role
  • Be physically fit and capable of working in varying weather and sea conditions
  • Be willing to undergo random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment
  • Be able to provide relevant employment references

Salary and Benefits:

Annual salary will be based on the position, skills, qualifications and relevant experience:

  • Ship's Master: AUD $80,000 to $110,000 per year plus superannuation
  • Ship's Engineer: AUD $80,000 to $105,000 per year plus superannuation

In addition to the base salary, employees may be eligible for performance-based bonus payments linked to catch outcomes and operational performance. Bonus arrangements are reviewed periodically and applied in accordance with company policy and industry practices. Total annual earnings may exceed the base salary range depending on individual performance, vessel operations and business circumstances.
