The Horticulture Grower is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing the cultivation and production of horticultural crops, including fruits, nuts, vegetables, turf, and flowers. The role involves overseeing all aspects of the growing process—from soil preparation and planting to harvest and marketing—while ensuring sustainable farming practices, quality production, and compliance with environmental and workplace safety standards.

Task & responsibilities

  • Maintain crop health and productivity through cultivation, pruning, de-budding, irrigation, and fertilisation.
  • Plan and coordinate crop production and marketing activities in alignment with environmental conditions, market trends, and contractual requirements.
  • Implement pest, disease, and weed control programs using sustainable and approved methods.
  • Prepare soil, select appropriate seeds, seedlings, bulbs, and grafting stock, and ensure optimal crop establishment.
  • Manage workplace health and safety processes to maintain a safe and compliant working environment.
  • Maintain detailed records of crop production, input usage, and market performance for continuous improvement.
  • Organise and oversee harvesting, grading, packing, storage, and dispatch of produce to meet quality and delivery standards.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise farm workers, contractors, and seasonal staff to ensure efficient farm operations.
  • Manage farm infrastructure, including maintenance of buildings, fences, machinery, and water systems.
  • Develop and execute climate risk management and sustainability strategies.
  • Oversee business operations including budgeting, cost control, taxation, and financial planning.

Qualification & experience

  • Diploma, Advanced Diploma, or Associate Degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, or related field (AQF Level 5 or above).
  • At least one year to three years of relevant experience in horticultural crop production may substitute for formal qualifications.
  • Sound knowledge of horticultural production systems, soil management, irrigation, and pest control.
  • Experience in farm management, marketing, and staff supervision is highly desirable.
