Role description

To design, build, and govern automation solutions across the business that deliver measurable operational efficiency. The Automation Engineer brings a developer mindset to identifying opportunities, building integrations, and implementing scalable automations that reduce manual effort, improve consistency, and support the delivery of outstanding outcomes across all business functions and the broader MSP environment.

Tasks & responsibilities

Automation Delivery

  • Design, build, and deploy automations using a developer-first approach across platforms including Rewst, Azure Logic Apps, Power Automate, Azure Functions, and ConnectWise PSA workflows

  • Build and maintain integrations across cloud platforms, SaaS tools, and APIs so that data and workflows move cleanly between systems

  • Refine and improve existing automations such as the customer monthly reporting process and ticket triage workflows

  • Build new automations such as user onboarding and offboarding in Microsoft 365, Defender alert ticket creation, and device provisioning workflows

Platform & Integration Management

  • Monitor automations daily for failures, errors, or unexpected behaviour and respond to issues in a timely manner

  • Maintain and manage integrations between core platforms including ConnectWise PSA, Microsoft 365, Azure, Rewst, and IT Glue

  • Proactively identify opportunities to leverage new platform capabilities and emerging technologies including AI to improve existing automations

Opportunity Identification & Prioritisation

  • Engage with team members and team leads across Managed Services, Consulting Services, Sales, Finance, and Operations to surface automation opportunities

  • Prepare straightforward business cases for each opportunity including estimated effort, expected time saving, and ROI

Continuous Improvement & Capability Building

  • Actively explore how AI and emerging technologies can enhance the automation capability

  • Stay current with emerging development tools, automation platforms, and practices relevant to MSP automation and the broader IT industry

  • Contribute to a culture where the broader team is empowered to identify automation opportunities and operate new tools with confidence and minimal ongoing support

Governance & Documentation

  • Take ownership of the existing Automation Landscape Review and formally document all relevant automations in IT Glue as the system of record

  • Ensure each automation has a clearly defined owner, documented purpose, trigger conditions, systems involved, and escalation contacts

  • Conduct periodic reviews of the automation environment to identify and address stale, broken, or redundant workflows

Qualifications & experience

  • Certifications or demonstrated proficiency in automation platforms are advantageous.

  • Minimum 3 + years experience in a automation development, automation, systems integration, or MSP operations role.

  • Technical experience within the Microsoft ecosystem, powershell, python, Azure logic apps, azure functions

  • Solid understanding of REST APIs, webhooks, and JSON-based integrations across multiple platforms.

  • Experience working across multiple business functions and managing competing priorities independently.

  • Experience building automations using platforms such as Azure Logic Apps, Power Automate, or Azure Functions.

  • Any exposure to REWST automation would be highly regarded but not essential

  • Experience working within an MSP or IT consultancy would be highly regarded but not essential

  • Strong development capability with proficiency in PowerShell and experience with other scripting languages such as Python or JavaScript.

  • Commercially minded with an understanding of the relationship between automation investment and business return

  • Collaborative and approachable, able to build trust with team members across all levels of the business

  • Self-directed and highly organised with the ability to manage a backlog of work and deliver without close supervision.
