The Mechanical Team delivers planned and reactive maintenance across critical water and wastewater infrastructure, including sewer pump stations, water reclamation plants, treatment facilities, pipelines and associated mechanical assets.
This position is based from the Breakwater depot, with a mix of workshop and field-based work across Barwon Water and BAS sites.

About the role: We are seeking a reliable and motivated Mechanical Trades Assistant to support the Mechanical Fitters in the safe and efficient delivery of maintenance, installation, repair and project works.
This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys practical work, working outdoors and in workshop environments, and being part of a team delivering essential services to the community.
You will assist tradespeople with site setup, equipment preparation, manual handling, confined space support, lifting activities, tool control, workshop organisation and general mechanical maintenance tasks under supervision.
Main duties: The role will include:
Supporting Mechanical Fitters with maintenance, installation and repair of plant, equipment and mechanical assets.
Assisting with pump removals, pump installations and general mechanical maintenance works.
Supporting pipework modifications, flange work, basic assembly and component change-outs.
Assisting with site setup and pack down, including barriers, signage, tools, equipment and materials.
Assisting with mechanical isolations, line breaking preparation and permit-controlled work under supervision.
Supporting confined space work as a standby person or assistant, where trained and authorised.
Assisting with lifting, rigging and load handling activities under direction.
Loading and unloading vehicles, tools, materials and consumables.
Maintaining clean, safe and organised workshop and worksite areas.
Cleaning, checking and maintaining tools and equipment in a serviceable condition.
Following SWMS, permits, instructions and BAS safety systems.
Communicating clearly with team members, supervisors, contractors and operations staff.
Participating in reactive maintenance and emergency response works where required.
What we are looking for:
We are looking for someone who is practical, reliable and willing to learn. The successful candidate will have:
Current Victorian Driver's Licence.
White Card / Construction Induction card.
Strong commitment to safety and following instructions.
Good mechanical aptitude and interest in mechanical maintenance.
Ability to work in workshop and field-based environments.
Willingness to perform physical work, including manual handling and site preparation.
Ability to work well in a team environment.
Good communication skills and a respectful attitude.
Willingness to work across multiple BAS sites in Geelong, coastal and surrounding regions.
Willingness to work reasonable overtime when required.
Commitment to ongoing training and development.
Desirable tickets and experience: The following would be highly regarded but are not essential:
Confined Space Entry.
Breathing Apparatus.
Working at Heights.
First Aid and CPR.
HR Truck Licence.
Dogman or rigging ticket.
Forklift licence.
Previous experience in mechanical, plumbing, civil, fabrication, construction, maintenance, farming or industrial work.
Experience using hand tools, power tools, pumps, pipework, valves or basic mechanical equipment.
