You're the bench guy other bench guys ask for help. You set the pace on a job without being asked. You spot a build going off before anyone else does, and the apprentices learn more from working next to you than from any course. We're hiring that person.
We are a custom commercial joinery business based in Revesby, making commercial fitout work. 3,500m² two-building factory. 8+ concurrent jobs running 2–4 week windows.
You'll lead a bench pair as part of a 3-pair floor. The job is half tools, half judgement — you build the difficult components yourself, you make the call on how a tricky job comes together, you set the standard the rest of the bench works to, and you train the apprentices and second-tier bench staff as you go. You'll be the senior voice on the floor when the Production Manager isn't standing next to you.
You'll own:
Building the parts of each job that need the most experience
Setting the daily build standard for your pair and the floor
First-line quality call — if the build is wrong, you stop it
Training apprentices and bringing newer tradespeople up to standard
Calling out a job that's tracking to blow its hours before it actually does
Working with the Production Manager on sequencing and OT decisions
Must-haves:
Trade-qualified — cabinet maker, joiner, shopfitter, or millworker
8+ years on a custom commercial joinery, shopfitting
Built complex custom carcasses, curved work, mitred face frames, or commercial-grade detail with minimal supervision
Reads drawings and setout packs fluently — picks up errors before the cut
Comfortable training and correcting other tradespeople, including older guys
Owns the work — doesn't pass a defect down the line to install
Nice-to-haves:
Background in hospitality fitouts, hotel joinery, or commercial bars
South / south-west Sydney based (Sutherland, Campbelltown, Liverpool, Fairfield, Bankstown corridor)
Apprenticeship training history
What you get:
$40–$48 per hr base wage + super
Genuine OT on top — not absorbed into salary
Working hours 7:00am–3:30pm with closes when the job's done, not the clock
Stable shop with full pipeline, no off-season
What this role is not:
A foreman role. A scheduling role. A path to running the floor at the expense of building the work. You'll be on the tools daily. If you've stopped wanting to be on a bench, this is not your role.
To apply: Send your CV and a short covering note (one page or less) describing the most complex custom job you've personally built and led others on — what made it hard, what you did with it, how it turned out.
